Proposal Clinic on Horizon 2020's Pillar II and Pillar III

Company: Hyperion.

Specification: A key service provided by Hyperion is to help researchers and scientists who are putting forward proposals to Horizon 2020.

The overall aim of the researchers is to put forward a proposal that will be selected by Horizon 2020 for funding.

In a "Proposal Clinic" the researchers present their ideas to the Hyperion trainer, who in turn provides feedback as to what changes needed to be made.

Problem: A lot of time was wasted in these clinics on basic knowledge. The researchers had to attend one of Hyperion's courses prior to the clinic, but often certain concepts were forgotten or misunderstood.

Solution: We took a "flipped classroom" approach. A tool was created using Captivate which includes the key principles from Hyperion’s courses, and what is to be included in the Proposal Clinic presentation. Before the Clinic, the researchers use this tool to prepare their presentation. They can do this in their own time and at their own pace.

Result: This has resulted in a much more efficient process for these Proposal Clinics. The researchers have a resource that gives them the information they need to prepare an effective proposal, and when the Hyperion trainer arrives they can focus on the deeper, more complex concepts that will help them stand out to the Horizon 2020 evaluators.

Microcourse on Horizon 2020 and Technology Readiness Level

Company: Hyperion.

Project: This project was a simple marketing exercise to promote the new eLearning branch of Hyperion.

One learning outcome of this "Microcourse" was to show  the connection between two concepts (Horizon 2020 and Technology Readiness Level) in a simple and enjoyable manner.

The second benefit it provides to the learners is it gives links to the users/learners to all the different components of the subject matter, so they can learn more about the topic if they wish.

Result: Hyperion were able to put the link to this project on their Twitter feed and it made their clients aware of the new eLearning services that they provide.

Stop-Motion Animated Video on Technology Readiness Level

Company: Hyperion.

In my spare time I had been playing around with stop motion animation. I created a video or two (eg. https://vimeo.com/134614429), and then I decided to apply it to something more practical. It was also a good excuse to play around with a bit of Lego again!

Result: Although this video was mainly just a bit of fun, it works very well in explaining the concept in question, and has received a good reaction from anyone who has viewed it.

Promotional Videos

Company: Hyperion

All Hyperion's eLearning courses are video based. The interactive courses usually contained short clips between 30s and 3mins.

However from time-to-time Hyperion would release full length videos on their Youtube channels, on the Hyperion website and on their other social media platforms. The purpose of these were to highlight new material in Hyperion's courses, or promoting new courses that were soon to be available.

Results: Even though these videos were being released free of charge, they were highly successful in promoting the Hyperion courses.

Many new customers specifically cited these videos as the reason for booking Hyperion's courses.
